Following a thrilling final in which Argentina defeated France on penalties, the awards for the 2022 World Cup were also announced, with some of the biggest names in football being recognized, with Argentina’s Lionel Messi being named the best player at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
The Argentine forward received the Adidas Golden Ball, which is awarded by the FIFA Technical Study Group to the best player (TSG).
France’s Kylian Mbappe and Croatia’s Luka Modric finished second and third, respectively.
Lionel Messi was awarded the Golden Ball (Argentina)
This was Messi’s World Cup, and he got his wish when he was named the tournament’s best player.
The 35-year-old finally got his hands on football’s biggest prize, hoisting the trophy after scoring seven goals.
He is the first man to score in the same edition’s last 16, quarter-final, semi-final, and final, and he wins the individual award for the second time.
Kylian Mbappe won the Adidas Golden Boot with 8 goals and 2 assists. Lionel Messi received the Silver Boot, while France’s Olivier Giroud received the Bronze.
Argentina’s Emiliano Martinez won the Adidas Golden Glove, while England won the FIFA Fair Play award.
Kylian Mbappe is the winner of the Golden Boot (France)
Prior to the match in Lusail, the France forward was tied with Messi on five goals. He went on to become the first man since Sir Geoff Hurst in 1966 to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final, converting two penalties and hitting a fine finish which took the game to extra-time.
It wasn’t enough for France to retain the trophy, but with eight goals in the finals, he matched Ronaldo’s total from 2002, and at the age of 23, Mbappe has plenty more to come.
Enzo Fernandez was named Young Player of the Year (Argentina)
There were many contenders for the title of best young player in Qatar. If England had not been eliminated in the quarter-finals, Jude Bellingham would have been a contender, as would France’s Aurelien Tchouameni.
Fernandez, on the other hand, was outstanding throughout the finals, a tenacious and determined midfielder who is also good in possession and, at the age of 21, a driving force in Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina.
Emiliano Martinez was awarded the Golden Glove (Argentina)
The Aston Villa goalkeeper saved two penalty shootouts for Argentina against the Netherlands and against France in the final, where he denied Kingsley Coman’s effort to give his side the advantage.
His presence was also palpable, and his stunning one-on-one stop from Randal Kolo Muani prevented France from clinching a dramatic late victory.
England wins the Fair Play award.
After all, England did not leave Qatar empty-handed.
Gareth Southgate’s side went the entire group stage without receiving a single booking, and they extended that streak by defeating Senegal 3-0 in the last 16.
Only in their quarter-final loss to France did they enter the referee’s notebook, when Manchester United captain Harry Maguire was cautioned in the closing stages with England trailing.
