The Indian hockey team finished second in Pool D of the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 after defeating Wales 4-2 in their final group match here on Thursday at the Kalinga Stadium.
Shamsher Singh (22′), Akashdeep Singh (33′, 46′), and Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh (60′) scored for India, while Gareth Furlong (43′) and Jacob Draper (45′) scored for Wales.
India will now compete in the crossovers against New Zealand, who finished third in Pool C.
Earlier in the day, England defeated Spain 4-0 to take first place in Pool D and advance directly to the quarter-finals.
The format for the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 is as follows: the four pool winners (A-D) advance to the quarter-finals, while the teams finishing second and third in their pools play crossover matches to claim the remaining four quarter-final spots.
Notably, England and India drew 0-0 on Sunday but won their other two games to finish tied on seven points. However, England finished with a higher goal difference of +9 than India, which finished with a goal difference of +4. Spain finished third in Pool D and will face Malaysia, who finished second in Pool C, for a spot in the final eight.
