Shubman Gill of India has moved up to second place in the ICC Men’s ODI Rankings, trailing only Pakistan skipper Babar Azam. The latest update was announced on Wednesday.
Gill, who has two half-centuries and 154 runs in the ongoing Asia Cup, has 759 rating points and is the highest-ranked of three Indian players who are now in the top 10 of the ODI batters ranking for the first time since January 2019.
Captain Rohit Sharma and talismanic batsman Virat Kohli have both risen two places to eighth and ninth place, respectively. On Tuesday, Sharma also hit a half-century against Sri Lanka, moving Kohli up in the rankings thanks to his unbeaten 122 against Pakistan.
Sharma, Kohli, and experienced left-handed opener Shikhar Dhawan were the top three hitters more than four years ago, and they were also in the top six in the batting table in September 2018.
KL Rahul (up 10 places to 37th) and Ishan Kishan (up two places to 22nd) of India have also made significant moves in the rankings, while left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav has risen five places to seventh in the men’s ODI bowler rankings after taking nine wickets in two Asia Cup matches.
On his comeback to ODIs, India’s fast-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has risen eight places to 27th, while all-rounder Hardik Pandya has risen 21 places to 56th in the bowlers rankings and is also up four places to sixth among all-rounders list.
Pakistan also boasts three hitters in the top ten batter rankings, with Azam leading by more than 100 rating points over Gill. Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman dropped a spot to fifth and tenth, respectively.
In South Africa, captain Temba Bavuma is closing in on a top-10 spot after hitting three century and two half-centuries in his last eight One-Day Internationals. He has risen 21 spots to 11th place, surpassing his previous best of 25th.
Australia’s Davis Warner (up one spot to fourth), Travis Head (up six spots to 20th), and Marnus Labuschagne (up 24 spots to 45th) have all advanced significantly in the batters’ rankings.
Trent Boult of New Zealand has risen to joint-second place in the bowling rankings, while Australia’s leg-spinner Adam Zampa has entered the top five for the first time after taking four wickets in the second match against South Africa.
Pakistan fast bowler Haris Rauf has risen eight places to 21st, followed by fellow pacer Naseem Shah (up 11 places to equal 51st), while South African spinners Keshav Maharaj (up 10 places to 25th) and Tabraiz Shamsi (up 15 places to 29th) are among the bowlers to move up the rankings, which are led by Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood.
