India captain Rohit Sharma has risen to second place after dominating the three-game ODI series against Sri Lanka, while Pakistan’s white-ball captain Babar Azam remains at the top of the ICC Men’s ODI rankings.
In a series when few hitters found their footing, Rohit Sharma finished as the series’ highest scorer with 157 runs at an average of 52.33 and a strike rate of 141.44, including two half-centuries.
Rohit’s rise up the leaderboard might also be attributed to vice-captain Shubman Gill’s troubles with the bat in Sri Lanka. The 24-year-old only averaged 19 points a game over the three-game series, but he did score 57 rubs. Behind Gill, Virat Kohli maintained his place at the 4th spot in the rankings despite raking in similar numbers with 58 runs in the series. Kohli shares the spot with Ireland’s Harry Tector who has a rating of 746.
The Indian three behind Pakistan skipper Babar Azam in the rankings despite not having played a single One Day International since the ODI World Cup campaign in November 2023, when the side was eliminated from the Group Stage due to a higher rating of 824 than Rohit’s 765.
Sri Lanka defeated India in an ODI series for the first time in 27 years, winning 2-0. Avishka Fernando was Sri Lanka’s best scorer in the series, with 137 runs and moving up 20 places to 68th. Pathum Nissanka, the side’s highest-ranked batter, scored 101 runs, solidifying his spot in the top ten and moving beyond England’s Dawid Malan to eighth spot with a rating of 708.
India is not set to play another ODI this year. The team’s next assignment is against Bangladesh at home, which will involve two test matches and three T20Is beginning in September.
