In the latest rankings update provided by the International Cricket Council on Wednesday, India’s top order batter Shubman Gill moved closer to Pakistan skipper Babar Azam for the top spot in the ICC Men’s ODI batting chart, while Virat Kohli advanced three places to joint fifth.
Babar’s 829-point advantage at the top of the Rankings has been cut to just six rating points as Gill has closed the gap with 823 points.
The Pakistan captain’s ratings fell after he scored 157 runs in five innings at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, his most recent effort a valiant 74 in a losing side against Afghanistan in Chennai.
Gill has 95 runs in three matches for India, and his rating has risen to 823 points on the back of his standout innings of 53 against Bangladesh in Pune.
Kohli, who is presently the second greatest run scorer in the 2023 ODI World Cup with 354 runs, shares fifth place in the rankings with Australian batsman David Warner (up two spots) after unbeaten 103 and 95 runs against Bangladesh and New Zealand, respectively.
However, Gill will have heavy competition from South African Quinton de Kock, who has set the tournament on fire with three magnificent century in five matches and is presently ranked third with 756 points.
Heinrich Klaasen (up seven places to fourth and a new career-high rating) is another South African making considerable headway. Daryll Mitchell, a New Zealand all-rounder, jumped 16 positions to 13th overall with 268 runs from four hits at the World Cup.
India captain Rohit Sharma, on the other hand, remained in the top 10, now sitting eighth with 725 rating points.
In the bowling rankings, Australian Josh Hazlewood remains at the top of the table (670 points), with Indian pacer Mohammad Siraj following closely behind with 668 points, rising 16 spots to 13th overall.
South African left-arm pacer Marco Jansen, the list’s greatest mover, rose 23 places to share 11th place with Scotland’s Michael Leask.
South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj moves up two places to third and to a new career-high rating after taking seven wickets so far in the competition, while Afghanistan veteran Mohammad Nabi (up four places to sixth) and Australia tweaker Adam Zampa (up four places to seventh) also make ground inside the top 10.
Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan continues at the top of the ODI all-rounder rankings, with South African beanpole Marco Jansen the greatest mover, leaping 23 places to equal 11th place with Scotland’s Michael Leask.
