In the latest ICC men’s batting rankings, India opener Shubman Gill has supplanted Pakistan skipper Babar Azam as the top-ranked men’s ODI batter.
He is currently only the fourth Indian player, behind Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli, to occupy the top spot in the ODI batter rankings. In the men’s ODI batting and bowling rankings, India presently has top-ranked players in Gill and Mohammed Siraj.
After missing the first two World Cup matches due to dengue, Gill has scored 219 runs in six innings, including 92 against Sri Lanka in Mumbai and 23 against South Africa in Kolkata.
Babar has scored 282 runs in eight knocks at the World Cup and drops six rating points below Gill into second place as his reign of more than two years as the top-ranked men’s ODI batter in the world comes to an end.
Talismanic batsman Virat Kohli, who recently equaled Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most men’s ODI centuries in Kolkata, moves three places to fourth place and is within one rating point of third-placed South Africa opener Quinton de Kock, who has made 543 runs so far in the World Cup.
Middle-order hitter Shreyas Iyer advances 17 places to 18th overall on the list of ODI batters, while Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman (up three slots to 11th) and Afghanistan counterpart Ibrahim Zadran (up six spots to 12th) also advance.
Kuldeep Yadav (up three spaces to fourth), Jasprit Bumrah (up three spots to eighth), and Mohammed Shami (up seven spots to tenth) have joined Siraj in the top ten ODI bowling rankings.
South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj (up two spaces to second) and Australia’s Adam Zampa (up six spots to third) are the other notable movers within the top 10, while Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi slips four spots to equal fifth with another seamer, Australia’s Josh Hazlewood.
Dilshan Madushanka of Sri Lanka, the World Cup’s highest wicket-taker, rises 31 places to 45th, while India spinner Ravindra Jadeja (up eight places to 19th) and South Africa left-armer Marco Jansen (up nine positions to equal 24th) are other major movers in ODI bowling rankings.
Despite missing the World Cup due to injury, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan remains the top-ranked all-rounder, with Australia’s Glenn Maxwell moving up two spots to sixth after his match-winning heroics of an astonishing 201 not out against Afghanistan in Mumbai on Tuesday.
