IND vs ENG 2023: India defeated England by 100 runs on Sunday at the BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium in front of 46,000 spectators. With 12 points, India moved to the top of the points table and continued their unbeaten streak in the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup. Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah bowled spells to remember for a long time.
For the first time in the competition, India was put to bat first and, on a challenging two-paced pitch, they could only manage 229/9. Top-scoring Indian batsman Rohit Sharma made 87 off 101 balls, but he remained steadfast when others fell all around him.
With eleven fours and three sixes in his gutsy performance, Rohit kept the innings together while he and K.L. Rahul added 91 runs for the fourth wicket. Suryakumar Yadav made a crucial 49 for India to go above 200.
After England had made 30 runs off their opening 27 deliveries, Bumrah, Shami, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav destroyed them with an amazing display of precise bowling to dismiss the hapless reigning champions for 129 in 34.5 overs.
Shami finished with a 4-22, but Bumrah had an excellent 3-32. With Kuldeep taking 2-24 and Jadeja taking 1-16, England suffered their fifth straight defeat.
Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow started the chase by hitting five boundaries in 4.3 overs while chasing 230. However, Malan could only manage an inside edge that broke his stumps in an attempt to cut Jasprit Bumrah through the off-side. At the very next ball, as Bumrah trapped Joe Root plumb lbw with a skiddy delivery which kept low, with the batter burning a review.
The Indian bowlers displayed relentless bowling, consistently beating the edges of the batters. This led to Ben Stokes attempting to smash Mohammed Shami down the ground but Shami castled him. There was no end to England’s trouble as Jonny Bairstow got an inside edge on the pads while trying to cut off Shami and the ball rolled onto the stumps.
Jos Buttler’s stumps were in ruins as Kuldeep Yadav took a mishandled delivery and used some extra grip off the field to turn it into a mile, further undermining England’s prospects. In the 24th over, Shami returned to the field and struck on the first ball, getting Moeen Ali to nick behind KL Rahul.
Even when dew appeared, England’s decline continued unabated. Chris Woakes was comfortably stumped by Ravindra Jadeja, while Kuldeep Yadav caught Liam Livingstone squarely in front with a googly.
Adil Rashid and David Willey tried delaying the inevitable, but Shami took the former out by castling him through the gate and Bumrah castled Mark Wood to bring England’s misery to an end.
