The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast for sustained thunderstorm activity, including lightning and gusty winds, across most districts of Odisha over the next few days. While the severity fluctuates, an Orange Warning has been issued for June 22, advising people to remain prepared.

Orange warning has been issued for widespread thunderstorm activity. Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 50-60 kmph are very likely at one or two places over Balasore, Bhadrak, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Gajapati.
Thunderstorms with winds up to 40-50 kmph are likely over Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Sundargarh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabrangpur, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh.
Additionally, Heavy Rainfall is very likely in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over Jajpur, Kendrapara, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.
June 22, 2026 (Monday):
Orange warning has been issued for severe thunderstorms. Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph are very likely at one or two places over Balasore, Bhadrak, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Gajapati.
Yellow warning for thunderstorms with winds up to 40-50 kmph over the remaining districts including Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabrangpur, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh.
Besides, heavy rainfall is expected at one or two places over Mayurbhanj and Balasore in the afternoon/evening.
June 23, 2026 (Tuesday):
Yellow warning has been issued for thunderstorm activity across the state. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph are likely over Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh.
Winds reaching 30-40 kmph are likely over Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nawrangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
June 24, 2026 (Wednesday):
Yellow Warning continues. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds up to 40-50 kmph are very likely over Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh.
Winds up to 30-40 kmph are likely over Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.
June 25, 2026 (Thursday):
Similar conditions are expected. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph are likely over the same set of districts as June 24 (coastal, southern, and central Odisha). Winds of 30-40 kmph are likely over the northern and western districts including Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.
The IMD has encouraged people to stay alert, particularly during the afternoon and nighttime hours, when such weather systems are most active. During thunderstorms and lightning, residents should stay away from open spaces, big trees, bodies of water, and metal structures.
