Chasing 209 runs, the hosts finished on 209/3 in 15.2 overs, taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. Suryakumar Yadav, India’s captain, scored an undefeated 82 runs off 37 balls, including nine fours and four sixes. He formed a winning partnership with Shivam Dube (36*). Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan’s hit gave India the lead. Kishan scored 76 runs from 32 balls, including 11 fours and four sixes. He was eventually fired by Ish Sodhi. India suffered an early setback when Matt Henry dismissed Sanju Samson (6) in the opening over. Then in the second over, Duffy dismissed Abhishek Sharma for a golden duck.
Earlier, Mitchell Santner led New Zealand to a strong finish, scoring 208/6 in 20 overs in the first T20I in Raipur on Friday. The New Zealand captain scored an undefeated 47* runs off 27 balls, including six fours and a maximum. Rachin Ravindra fell just short of a half-century, being bowled by Kuldeep Yadav for 44 off 26 balls. Meanwhile, Shivam Dube claimed Daryl Mitchell’s wicket. The visitors started strong, but Harshit Rana came to India’s rescue by removing Conway. Devon Conway smashed Arshdeep Singh for 18 runs in the first over and was hoping to add more boundaries in the fourth. But Rana struck, removing Conway for 19 off nine balls and also breaking his partnership with Tim Seifert. Then Seifert also departed, losing his wicket to Varun Chakaravarthy for 24 off 13 balls. Meanwhile, Kuldeep removed Glenn Phillips for 19 off 13 balls.
Abhishek was in excellent form in the first T20I, cementing his reputation as the world’s best T20I batter. The Indian opener scored 84 from 35 balls, including five fours and eight sixes, and was striking at 240.00. Meanwhile, Rinku Singh took on the finisher position with ease, scoring 44* off 20 deliveries and remaining unbroken as India posted 238/7 in 20 overs. Defending a target of 239 runs, the hosts held New Zealand to 190/7 in 20 overs, with Shivam Dube claiming two wickets. Meanwhile, Varun Chakaravarthy received two dismissals.
