Asia Cup 2023: On Monday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released the 17-man roster for the Asia Cup 2023. Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, revealed the squad on Monday afternoon in New Delhi. The announcement came following a selection meeting attended by Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid.
Experienced players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah are joined by young players like Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma.
The participation of both KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer was another major acquisition. Tilak Varma has also been called up for his first ODI.
Speaking on Varma’s selection, Agarkar during the press conference, said, “We saw some real promise in west indies. It will give him some exposure. We can pick 17 here in the World Cup, it would be 15.”
“Shreyas has been declared match fit. KL has picked up a small niggle that’s why Sanju is with us,” he added.
Tilak Varma made an impression on everyone in his first series against the West Indies. The youngster appeared technically sound and to have the temperament required for international competition. Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri and selector Sandeep Patil both agreed that the 20-year-old would be in their team for both the Asia Cup and the World Cup.
Sanju Samson has been appointed as the continental event’s backup goalkeeper.
