On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the plenary session of the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, saying that the group believes in conversation and diplomacy rather than violence. PM Modi appealed for unity in the fight against terrorism and terror funding, urging members to cooperate for the greater good.

Speaking at a session of BRICS summit titled ‘Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security’, PM Modi said: “We support dialogue and diplomacy, not war. And just as we were able to overcome a challenge like COVID together, we are certainly able to create new opportunities to ensure a secure , strong and prosperous future for future generations.”

He underlined “pressing challenges” such as wars, climate change, economic uncertainty, and terrorism that the world is facing. “Preventing inflation, ensuring food security, energy security, health security, water security, are matters of priority for all countries in the world,” he added.

On Terrorism And Terror Funding

PM Modi called for global unity against terrorism, and said there was “no place for double standards” in such serious issues.

He said: “In order to counter terrorism and Terror financing, we need the single minded, firm support of all. There is no place for double standards on this serious matter. We need to take active steps to stop radicalization of youth in our countries. We must work together on the long pending matter in the UN of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism.”

He further asked BRICS partners to collectively raise their voices for reforms in global institutions.

“We must move forward in a time bound manner on reforms in global institutions such as the UN Security Council, Multilateral development banks, and the WTO. We must be careful to ensure that this organisation does not acquire the image of one that is trying to replace global intuitions, instead of being perceived as one that wishes to reform them,” he said.

PM Modi Calls For Safe Use Of AI

PM Modi emphasized the importance of nations working together to develop global standards for cybersecurity and safe and secure AI. “In this era of technology, new challenges have emerged such as cyber deepfake, disinformation. There are high expectations of BRICS. I believe that as a diverse and inclusive platform, BRICS can play a positive role in all areas,” he stated.

PM Modi attended the 16th BRICS Summit on Wednesday and is expected to undertake key bilateral conversations on the sidelines, particularly with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

He also welcomed new members to the Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRICS) meeting and complimented Russian President Vladimir Putin on his excellent year in office.
