India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 Highlights: Pat Cummins and Scott Boland both claimed three wickets, with Nathan Lyon taking two, as Australia wiped out seven wickets in the third session to win the thrilling fourth Test by 184 runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal’s long stay in the middle was terminated by Australia captain Pat Cummins, exposing India’s tail. Washington Sundar is the final recognized batter. Jaiswal took 208 balls for his 84 runs before opting for a hook shot and dying controversially. Rishabh Pant demonstrated in the second session that he can drop anchor when necessary, but he ended his magnificent act of resistance in the most awful way early in the third session.
Pant attempted a huge shot against Travis Head and was caught in the deep. That terminated an 88-run partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal that lasted 197 balls. Ravindra Jadeja then went to Scott Boland, followed by Nitish Kumar Reddy to Nathan Lyon in the next over.
Pant and Jaiswal ensured that India lost no wickets in the second session, despite three falling before lunch. Jaiswal began the workout aggressively, and he was able to get away with trying to knock Nathan Lyon out of the park but failing. However, the young opener has mostly served as India’s anchor throughout the day, with Australia setting a total of 340 to chase. Pant and Jaiswal’s resistance in the second session meant that Australia went back to the dressing room at Tea rather frustrated.
Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul had earlier fallen in the same over to Pat Cummins shortly after the drinks break in the first session of Day 5 of India’s fourth Test against Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground. Rohit and Jaiswal faced some totally unplayable deliveries from Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and subsequently Scott Boland, but the Indian openers remained focused as they survived the early pace salvo. Rohit, in particular, appeared to be in greater form than ever on this trip, but he collapsed for nine runs off nine off 40 balls. India is aiming for 340 runs, which is significantly greater than the previous record for the most successful Test run chase at the MCG, which was established in 1928.
India began the day with Jasprit Bumrah. Mohammed Siraj bowled the first over of Day 5, and Bumrah took only four balls to remove Nathan Lyon’s middle stump, bringing an end to his incredible last wicket stand with Scott Boland. Australia were all out for 234 in the second innings.
India won the opening Test in Perth and Australia bounced back at Adelaide. The Test in Brisbane was a draw. With the win today, Australia takes a 2-1 lead and the final Test will start on Friday in Sydney.
