Jaspirt Bumrah is set to become India’s first paceman to lead the country in Test cricket since Kapil Dev. Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the Edgbaston Test against England after testing positive for COVID-19 for the second time, and Bumrah will captain India in his absence, according to news agency PTI.
During India’s tour game against Leicestershire, Rohit tested positive for COVID-19. He had scored 25 runs in the first innings but did not bat in the second after testing Covid positive.
On Wednesday, the Indian team practiced at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham, and reports indicate that Rohit did not attend.
“Rohit is out of this Test match, starting July 1, as his RT-PCR test has come positive again. He is still in isolation. Jasprit Bumrah, who is one of the vice-captains in absence of KL Rahul, will lead the team,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
Bumrah will be the 36th cricketer to lead India in the longest format since it began in 1932. The Gujarat pacer has 123 wickets in 29 Tests and has developed into one of the world’s best fast bowlers.
India has a 2-1 lead in the Test series against England. Rohit had previously led India to a 2-0 home Test series victory over Sri Lanka this year.
Virat Kohli-led team Last year, India led England 2-1, but the fifth and final Test was canceled due to a Covid outbreak in the Indian camp. The BCCI and ECB have decided to reschedule the remaining Test matches for this year.
India will also play three T20Is and three ODIs on the tour apart from the Test match.
