India set a challenging target of 297 in the third ODI and series-decider match between India and South Africa, thanks to Sanju Samson’s maiden ODI Hundred and Rinku Singh’s sensational finish to the innings.
South African skipper Aiden Markram had hoped for early breakthroughs after opting to bowl first, and debutant Rajat Patidar showed promise with an aggressive start. Nandre Burger, however, ended his inning at 22.
B Patidar’s opening partner, Sai Sudharsan, was bowled by Beuran Hendricks in the eighth over, putting India at 49/2 at the end of the first powerplay. The ship’s stability was then placed on the shoulders of skipper Lokesh Rahul and the in-form Sanju Samson. The pair methodically recreated the innings, showcasing a partnership that added 52 runs.
Wiaan Mulder broke this vital stand in the 19th over, bowling Rahul for 21. Tilak Varma, the young hitter, struggled to find his rhythm at first, causing the run rate to drop. Samson, on the other hand, remained calm and achieved his fifty off 66 balls. However, a spectacular reversal began with the arrival of Sanju Samson, who joined forces with Tilak Varma to write a superb 116-run third-wicket partnership. Varma ultimately found his stride before collapsing for 52 as boundaries became scant.
Sanju Samson’s previous career best of 86 came in a 2022 home game against South Africa, but his inability to score in the three digits in 15 games regularly cost him selection. With a perfectly timed knock to seize the initiative in the pivotal series finale, Samson ended that drought.
Samson, in particular, demonstrated his class and drive by scoring his maiden ODI century, which brought a special sparkle to India’s innings. His calm 108-run innings off 114 balls created the groundwork for a powerful finish.
The momentum established by Samson and Varma was well maintained by the successive batsmen. In a critical cameo toward the finish, Rinku Singh batted brilliantly for 38 runs, infusing a late surge of fire into the Indian innings. His strong stroke play in the death overs played a crucial role in India’s surge, ensuring that the squad added an astounding 93 runs in the final 10 overs.
Rinku Singh’s aggressive play and assistance from Washington Sundar (14) drove India to a daunting total of 296/8 in the final overs.
