Lakshya Sen of India won the men’s singles title at the Canada Open 2023 after defeating defending All England champion China’s Li Shi Feng (World No 10) in straight games 21-18, 22-20.
Lakshya has won two BWF World Tour 500 titles, the first being the India Open in January 2022.
WR-4 was defeated by the Indian, who is presently rated 19 in the world. Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the Round of 32, Japan’s Kento Nishimoto in the semis, and China’s Li Shi Feng in the final to win the title.
In the Round of 32, Lakshya, who is presently rated 19, defeated world number four Kunlavut Vitidsarn.
He then defeated Japan’s Kento Nishimoto, the world number 11, in the semifinals to go to his second Super 500 final and first BWF summit fight in over a year. Lakshya won the game 21-17, 21-14.
Lakshya had nose surgery for a deviated septum after the World Championships last August and required a long time to recuperate. His most recent final appearance was in August of last year at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
After a string of early tournament exits, he showed signs of improvement by reaching the semifinals of the Thailand Open.
Meanwhile, double Olympic medalist PV Sindhu failed to book a finale ticket after losing 14-21 15-21 to world No. 1 Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in her women’s singles semifinal.
