World IVF Day, is observed on July 25 every year. Louise Brown was the first baby delivered utilizing the IVF procedure on this day in 1978. As a rising number of couples seek IVF therapy, it is critical for patients to follow certain dos and don’ts in order to maximize their chances of success.

How is IVF Done?

In the first phase, fertility therapies are administered to the female body in order to stimulate egg development. Many eggs are required since some eggs may not develop or fertilize after healing.

During IVF, mature eggs are taken from the female’s ovaries and fertilized in a laboratory with the male’s sperm. After that, the fertilized egg (embryo) is implanted in the uterus. An IVF cycle lasts roughly three weeks in total, but it may take longer if the process is split down into smaller parts.

“IVF is a complex and costly procedure, and adhering to these guidelines can help improve the overall success rate and ensure a smoother experience for the individuals undergoing treatment,” Dr Nisha Pansare, fertility consultant, Nova IVF Fertility, Pune said.

She offered the following dos and don’ts to remember throughout IVF treatment:

Dos:

Follow the doctor’s instructions: Throughout the IVF procedure, it is critical to properly follow the guidelines supplied by your fertility specialist. This involves taking prescribed drugs, attending appointments, and making the advised lifestyle adjustments.

Maintain a healthy diet: A nutritious and well-balanced diet is vital throughout IVF treatment. To improve general health and fertility, eat meals high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Stay hydrated: Drinking enough water is essential for overall health and reproductive health. Hydration can also assist keep blood flowing to the ovaries and uterus.

Get enough rest: IVF therapy can be both emotionally and physically draining. Make sure you receive enough rest and sleep to alleviate stress and support your body during this time.

Exercises that help alleviate stress, such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises, or spending time in nature, should be practiced. High levels of stress can have a negative impact on fertility and overall well-being.

Communicate with your partner: IVF can be stressful for both couples. Maintain open and supportive communication with your partner as you both go through treatment.

Educate yourself: Understanding the IVF process and what to expect at each stage will help to reduce anxiety and enable you to make educated decisions.

Continue light and moderate exercise, such as walking or swimming, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Physical activity on a regular basis can help relieve stress and boost overall health.

‘Maintain a positive outlook to reduce anxiety and promote well-being,’ advised Dr Dorothy Dessa, consultant, infertility expert, Milann – The Fertility Specialists. Seek emotional support and insights from individuals who have gone through similar situations.”

Don’ts:

Don’t skip medications: Medication adherence is critical to the outcome of IVF treatment. Missed doses or deviations from the prescribed schedule can have an impact on the outcome.

Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol intake: Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption might have a negative impact on fertility and the success of IVF. It is best to avoid these substances throughout treatment.

Avoid excessive caffeine use: While moderate caffeine consumption is generally regarded safe, excessive consumption has been associated to decreased fertility. Limit your daily caffeine consumption to a moderate amount.

Don’t do any rigorous exercise: High-intensity activities and heavy lifting should be avoided during IVF therapy because they can strain the body and jeopardize the procedure’s success.

Don’t worry about the outcome: Although IVF can be emotionally draining, try not to obsess about the outcome. Stress and worry can have a negative impact on fertility. Believe in your medical team and the process.

Avoid unverified supplements: While some supplements may be beneficial, it is critical to see your doctor before beginning any new vitamins or herbal therapies, as some may conflict with fertility medicines.

Don’t neglect birth control: Continue to use birth control as indicated until told otherwise by your doctor to avoid unexpected pregnancy during IVF therapy.

Don’t hesitate to seek support: IVF treatment can be emotionally taxing. Reach out to support groups, therapists, or counsellors who specialise in fertility to help cope with emotional challenges.

Further, Dr Dessa said, “Steer clear of hot baths, saunas, or anything that exposes you to high temperatures. Avoid exposure to harmful chemicals or substances that may affect fertility.”

By adhering to these dos and don’ts during IVF treatment, patients can enhance their chances of a successful outcome and create a supportive environment for the process.

“Remember, every individual’s journey is unique, and maintaining a positive mindset and seeking professional guidance are crucial aspects of this transformative experience,” Dr Pansare concluded.
