The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms with lightning and gusty gusts for most Odisha districts from May 7 to May 13.
The IMD has issued a yellow warning for May 7 in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundergarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Nabarangapur districts, predicting thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface wind (wind speeds of up to 40-50 kmph).
Furthermore, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface wind (wind speeds of up to 30-40 kmph) are very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours on May 7 in one or two locations across the districts of Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir.
On May 8, a yellow warning was issued for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) in one or two locations over Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
The IMD predicts a yellow alert for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty gusts (30-40 kmph) for May 9 across Balasore, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar.

On May 11, a yellow warning for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) is likely to occur over Balasore, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundergarh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangapur, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Nayagarh, Khurda and Puri.
On May 12 and 13, IMD issued a yellow warning for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri, forecasting thunderstorms and lightning.
The IMD has cautioned people to be wary of lightning strikes, strong gusts, and potential damage to loose structures, trees, and standing crops during this time. Farmers and outdoor workers have been advised to take the required safeguards.
People should avoid open areas, towering trees, and unsafe shelters during thunderstorms.
