The 134th episode of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s monthly radio broadcast Mann Ki Baat aired on Sunday, and it addressed residents in India and overseas. Since its inception in 2014, the programme has grown into a major public outreach platform through which the Prime Minister highlights inspiring tales, social projects, and successes from across the country. In this episode, Prime Minister Modi highlighted inspiring examples of citizen-led transformation. He recalled Akash Gupta from Basti, who worked with friends to clear the Manorama River of plastic and water hyacinths, thereby restoring cleanliness and raising awareness in the local community.

He also shared the story of Balakrishna Ayya, a retired teacher from Goa, who took initiative to address water scarcity in the Maddi-Tolap area by contributing to the laying of water pipelines, ensuring water supply to several households.

Astronomy enthusiasm among youth

Highlighting India’s growing interest in science, PM Modi spoke about the country’s rich tradition in astronomy and rising participation among youth. He mentioned organisations like the Bangalore Astronomical Society, Khagol Mandal, Astro-Keralam, and ISAAC, which are actively promoting astronomy through workshops, night camps, and educational programmes.

He encouraged young people to join astronomy clubs and visit planetariums, especially during holidays, to deepen their interest in space science.

Cultural pride and Chola heritage

PM Modi also reflected on his recent visit to the Netherlands, where ancient copper plates from the Chola period were returned to India in the presence of the Dutch Prime Minister. He said the artefacts, linked to Rajendra Chola I, highlight India’s rich maritime history, cultural legacy, and global connections with Southeast Asia.

He noted that the government remains committed to preserving and restoring such invaluable heritage items.

Service without resources: Kerala swimming initiative

Sharing another inspiring story, the Prime Minister spoke about a unique swimming initiative in Aluva, Kerala, where Saji Valasseril runs a “school” without fees or buildings conducted in a river. Over 15,000 people, including differently-abled children, have been trained in swimming, showcasing how social service can thrive with dedication rather than infrastructure.

Mango season and farmers’ contribution

PM Modi also touched upon India’s love for mangoes, mentioning varieties like Hapus, Kesar, Dasheri, and Langda. He said mango cultivation is now expanding from villages to global markets and praised farmers for their crucial role in strengthening India’s agricultural economy.

With rising temperatures across the country, PM Modi urged citizens to take precautions during the intense heat. He advised people to stay hydrated, avoid unnecessary exposure to sunlight, and follow government-issued safety guidelines.

The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s traditional cooling beverages as natural remedies for heat relief. He mentioned Aam Panna, Lassi, Buttermilk, Sattu Sharbat, Kokum Sharbat, Sol Kadhi, Panakam, Neer Mor, Sambaram, and Bela Panna, calling them part of India’s shared cultural heritage and the spirit of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.”

Athletes share inspiring journeys

The episode also featured conversations with athletes Animesh Kujur and Gurindervir Singh. Kujur shared his journey from school-level football to representing India internationally, while Gurindervir Singh spoke about his journey from a Navy personnel to becoming one of India’s fastest sprinters, crediting inspiration from his father, Milkha Singh, and Usain Bolt.
