On the second day of the 6th Elite Men’s National Boxing Championships, here on Sunday, 2018 Commonwealth Games champion Gaurav Solanki, two-time Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Mohammad Hussamuddin, and 2021 Asian Youth champion Biswamitra Chongtham all won convincingly.
Solanki (60kg) of Haryana was up against Himachal Pradesh’s Navraj Chauhan. Solanki defeated his opponent 5-2 after the bout was reviewed, displaying tremendous grit and vigour in a hard-fought contest. On Tuesday, he will face Harendra Singh of Madhya Pradesh in the Round of 16.
Hussamuddin (57kg), representing the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB), faced Assam’s Bulen Buragohain. The SSCB fighter was in cruise control throughout the fight, displaying his attacking prowess as well as quick movement to secure a a 5:0 win by unanimous decision.
On Tuesday, the 2022 Asian bronze medalist will face Mizoram’s Lallawmawma in the round of 16.
Biswamitra (51kg), Hussamuddin’s SSCB teammate, also put up a spectacular attacking performance against N. Madhaba of Orissa. His superior technical ability allowed him to dictate terms from the start and defeat his opponent as the referee called a halt to the contest (RSC) in the first round. On Tuesday, Biswamitra will square off against Andhra Pradesh’s Prabhudas Yadla in the pre-quarterfinals.
Varinder Singh (60kg), who is representing the Railway Sports Control Board (RSCB), won against Rahul of Chandigarh. Varinder, who defeated Ibrahim Mohmmed of SSCB 5-0, will face Ibrahim Mohmmed of SSCB in the round of 16 on Tuesday.
Ankit Narwal (63.5kg), another RSCB pugilist, also powered his way to an impressive victory over Arun Kumar of Pondicherry after the referee stopped the contest (RSC) in Round 1. In the pre-quarters stage on Tuesday, the 2019 Asian Youth Championships silver medalist will face the winner of the bout between Karnataka’s Karan B.K. and Uttar Pradesh’s Ratandeep Sharma.
On Monday, Assam’s record six-time Asian medalist Shiva Thapa will begin his campaign in the Round-of-16 stage against Delhi’s Jaswinder Singh.
The championships feature 386 boxers competing in 13 different weight categories.
