Argentina’s Lionel Messi won the Best FIFA Men’s Player Award 2022, and Argentina was the overall winner of the Best FIFA Football Awards 2022.
Argentina, champion of the 2022 Qatar World Cup, took home four trophies at the ceremony, according to the Xinhua news agency. This is Messi’s second time winning the award, having first won it in 2019.
Argentina’s head coach, Lionel Scaloni, was named Best Men’s Coach, Emiliano Martinez was named Best Men’s Goalkeeper, and the Argentine fans were named Best Fan for the first time.
For the second year in a row, Alexia Putellas of Spain was named Best FIFA Women’s Player 2022.
The ceremony began following FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s opening speech, the ceremony started with a video tribute to Brazilian legend Pele, who passed away at age of 82 on December 29, 2022.
Marcia Aoki, Pele’s wife, was presented with a special recognition award by Brazilian legend Ronaldo and President Infantino.
Mary Earps of England was named Best Women’s Goalkeeper, and Sarina Wiegman of England’s women’s national team was named Best Women’s Coach.
Marcin Oleksy, a Polish amputee footballer, won the Puskas Award (Best Goal) on November 6, 2022, with a one-foot volley scored in a match between his team Warta Poznan and Stal Rzeszow.
Georgia’s Luka Lochoshvili received the Fair Play Award. Lochoshvili extracted the tongue of Austrian player Georg Teigl, who was unable to breathe after a collision and had swallowed his own tongue, in February 2022, while playing for Wolfsberger AC against Austria in Vienna.
