Diabetes is a growing disease around the world. According to a recent ICMR report this year, India is on track to become a diabetes capital, with over a million individuals living with high blood sugar levels and counting. Diabetes is not always reversible, but it can be managed with lifestyle changes and medication as prescribed. Diet is extremely important in diabetes control. There is a list of foods that are good and bad for insulin sensitivity. According to experts, consuming plant-based foods can help control blood sugar levels. Moringa is one of the foods included in this list. Moringa is taken in a variety of forms, including leaves, leaf powder, and drumsticks.  It is a superfood that traces its etymology to Moringa oleifera. This is a herbal plant that has been in use since ancient times for harnessing its medicinal properties.

Can moringa help with diabetes?

Moringa leaves are said to contain potent chemicals and characteristics. It contains quercetin, an antioxidant that lowers blood pressure and stabilises glucose levels.

According to a study published in Science Direct, moringa has been shown to reduce blood sugar levels in adults. However, more research and investigations are needed to ensure its efficacy as a diabetes medication. While moringa is typically safe for most people, it is important to see a healthcare practitioner before including it into your diet, especially if you have diabetes or are taking medication. Moringa may interact with some drugs, especially those that influence blood sugar levels. To avoid hypoglycemia, monitor blood sugar levels closely when starting moringa.

Moringa benefits for diabetes

  • Weight Management: Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for managing diabetes, and moringa may assist in this regard. Its high fibre content promotes satiety, helping to reduce overall calorie intake. Additionally, moringa’s anti-inflammatory properties may support weight loss efforts by improving metabolic function. A balanced diet that includes moringa can contribute to better weight management and, consequently, improved blood sugar control.
  • Blood Sugar Regulation: Several studies suggest that moringa may help regulate blood sugar levels. Research indicates that compounds in moringa, particularly isothiocyanates, may enhance insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar levels.
  • Antioxidant Properties: Moringa leaves are rich in antioxidants, including flavonoids and polyphenols. These helps in reduction of cell damage. Antioxidants help protect cells from damage caused by unstable molecules called free radicals. In diabetes, oxidative stress is often increased, leading to cellular damage.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Chronic inflammation is a common feature of diabetes. Moringa leaves contain compounds that have been shown to possess anti-inflammatory properties. By reducing inflammation, moringa leaves may help improve insulin sensitivity and overall glycemic control.

While moringa is typically safe for most people, it is important to see your doctor before including it into your diet, especially if you have diabetes or are taking medication. Moringa may interact with some drugs, especially those that influence blood sugar levels. To avoid hypoglycemia, monitor blood sugar levels closely when starting moringa.
