Neeraj Chopra, a two-time Olympic medalist, won the javelin throw gold at the Ostrava Golden Spike 2025 event on Tuesday, throwing 85.29 metres.
Neeraj won the prestigious meet with one throw remaining, as his best effort of 85.29m stayed unblemished after six rounds, ensuring him another top podium finish this season. This is Neeraj’s second victory in a month, following his triumph in the Paris Diamond League meet a few days ago.
The 27-year-old Neeraj from Haryaha finished first with his greatest performance on his third turn, followed by Douw Smit of South Africa (84.12m) and Anderson Peters of Granada (83.63m).
Neeraj, who made history for India by winning gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and silver in Paris in 2024, had recently finished first in the Paris Diamond League and was hoping to continue his winning streak in Ostrava.
He managed to accomplish so, however the distance he covered on Tuesday disappointed him. Neeraj Chopra crossed the 90-meter milestone a few weeks ago and hopes to repeat the accomplishment.
But that didn’t happen on Tuesday, as he fouled on his opening try. He managed 83.45 on his second attempt, but made a stunning recovery by throwing the spear to 85.29 on his third turn. That gave him the lead with Samit Douw in second position at 84.12m and Anderson Peters in third with 83.63.
Neeraj’s distance did not improve his distance in his fourth, fifth, or sixth throws, but he still finished first. Chopra recorded a distance of 82.17m on his fourth try, 81.01m on his fifth, then intentionally fouled his sixth and final throw because he was unable to execute it properly and obtain a good distance.
