Nighttime heartburn, also known as acid reflux, can seriously affect your sleep and have an influence on your general health. For many people, the painful burning sensations in their chests and throats can be the worst, causing restless nights, exhaustion, and even long-term health problems if not treated appropriately. Heartburn can be caused by a multitude of circumstances, including reclining down after eating, consuming spicy foods, or eating large meals before bedtime. These variables can relax the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), allowing acid to ascend. The good news is that it can be treated with specific lifestyle and dietary changes.

Here are few tips that you can follow to reduce nighttime discomfort and enjoy a better quality of sleep.

5 Ways to Cure Nighttime Heartburn

Eat Smaller, Lighter Meals: Changing your eating habits is one of the most effective strategies to relieve nocturnal indigestion. Avoid eating large heavy meals in the evening, at least 2-3 hours before bedtime. Choose foods that are easy to digest and low in spices.

Limit your caffeine and alcohol intake: Caffeine and alcohol are typical causes of indigestion. They primarily cause acid reflux at night, resulting in significant stomach discomfort. Avoid drinking tea, coffee, caffeinated soft drinks, or alcohol, especially before bedtime.

Manage Stress: Stress is a key cause of indigestion and heartburn. It can increase stomach acid and upset your digestive system. Incorporating stress-reduction activities into your regular routine can benefit both your mental and digestive health.

Avoid Sleeping in Certain Positions: The position you sleep in can influence your chances of getting heatburn. Sleeping on your back or right side might exacerbate heartburn because it allows stomach acid to flow more easily back into the esophagus. So, to avoid indigestion, sleep on your left side.

Over-the-Counter medications: For those who have recurrent evening burns, over-the-counter drugs can be beneficial. They lower acid production and can be taken before meals to avoid heartburn.
