In a significant move, the Odisha government revoked its previous decision on the transfer of tribal land to non-tribals on Friday. According to sources, a decision in this regard was made today at the state Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at the Lok Seva Bhawan.
It is worth noting that the Odisha Cabinet passed an amendment on November 14 that allows tribals to transfer their immovable assets to non-tribals with a written order from the sub-collector. It also permitted them to use state financial institutions to mortgage land for purposes other than agriculture.
However, the administration postponed their decision in this regard on November 17 due to strong resistance from the state’s BJP and Congress.
The opposition to the government’s proposal persisted during the Odisha Assembly’s Winter Session, which began on November 21. Over the matter, BJP and Congress MPs halted House activities on November 22 and 23, and no business could be conducted by the House on these two days.
The government rescinded its decision to enable tribals to transfer their land to non-tribals on Friday. The Assembly is anticipated to make an announcement in this regard today.
