India surpassed its Tokyo 2020 tally to reach 20 medals for the first time in Paralympic Games history, and the score is poised to rise further on Wednesday as the country’s para-athletes continue their pursuit of gold.
Deepthi Jeevanji won bronze in the women’s 400m T20 race during her Paralympic debut in the evening. India gained four more medals to its Para-Athletics tally late Tuesday night, with two double-podium finishes pushing its total above Tokyo’s 19 medals.
at the process, India surpassed the 50-medal mark at the Paralympics, now standing at 51.
Ajeet Singh won the silver medal in the men’s javelin throw F46 event with a personal best throw of 65.62m, and Sundar Singh Gurjar took bronze medal with season best throw of 64.96m as India achieved its first double podium finish in athletics at Paris Paralympics.
Later, Sharad Kumar won the silver medal in men’s high jump T63 with a best jump of 1.88m, creating a new Paralympic record in the T42 category. Sharad also upgraded his bronze medal from Tokyo in the event.
Mariyappan Thangavelu, the gold medalist from the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, won bronze with a best leap of 1.85m, giving India their second double podium result in athletics at the Paris Games.
India moved up to 17th place in the medal tally after winning five medals in a single day, with three gold, seven silver, and ten bronze.
Indian athletes will compete in six medal events, aiming to add to their historic medal count.
