After the deadline for withdrawing nominations expired on Saturday, NDA nominee Droupadi Murmu and joint opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha are the only two candidates left in the race for the presidency.
According to Rajya Sabha Secretary General P C Mody, who is also the Returning Officer for the July 18 elections, 115 nomination papers from 94 individuals were received until June 29, with 107 being rejected for failing to meet the required criteria.
Murmu and Sinha’s nomination papers, four sets each, were found to meet all of the requirements for a valid nomination and were accepted, he said.
The Rajya Sabha Secretariat said in a statement that voting will take place in Room 63 of the Parliament House, and in notified rooms in state assemblies between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The Electoral College for the Office of President of India consists of the elected members of both Houses of Parliament, as well as the elected members of all state Legislative Assemblies and the union territories of Delhi and Puducherry.
With several regional parties, including the BJD, BSP, and SAD, endorsing Murmu, the odds are stacked in favor of the NDA nominee, who is expected to easily win the election.
MPs typically vote in Parliament, while members of state legislative assemblies, including MLAs from the NCT of Delhi and the Union Territory of Puducherry, vote in their respective capitals at locations designated by the Election Commission of India.
