Ram Setu, starring Akshay Kumar and Jacqueline Fernandez, is in theaters today. Due to the Diwali holiday, it is expected that fans and moviegoers will flock to theaters to see the film. It goes up against Ajay Devgn and Sidharth Malhotra’s Thank God. Two major box office contenders draw a lot of attention. Ram Setu is already trending on Twitter as viewers share their thoughts. The reaction to Akshay Kumar’s film has been mixed. While some are calling it a blockbuster, others are disappointed with Akshay Kumar once again.
Ram Setu is about a non-believer, veteran archaeologist Dr Aryan Kulshreshtha (Akshay Kumar in long hair and a distinguished grey beard), who is tasked with disproving the reality of the Ram Setu, the bridge described in Valmiki’s Ramayana. However, he discovers that the structure is possibly man-made, implying that Lord Ram may be historical after all. The story follows Dr. Aryan as he overcomes obstacles in his search for Ravana’s golden Lanka, with the assistance of an environmentalist Dr. Sandra (Jacqueline Fernandez) and a local Lankan guide AP (Satya Dev).
First and foremost, Ram Setu is enjoyable. It is slick in places and thrilling in others. That is due to a good story and some of the best background music used in a Hindi film this year. As the trailer implied, the VFX and CGI are questionable. The scenes with the diving suit are almost cartoonish. The breathtaking underwater sequences make up for it. The way director Abhishek Sharma has captured the beauty and grandeur of Ram Setu beneath the Indian Ocean is reminiscent of the BBC Earth documentary Blue Planet.
Ram Setu’s tone and tenor are similar to a sleeper hit from earlier this year, Karthikeya 2. That one was about discovering Lord Krishna’s historicity, and this one is about Lord Ram. The action, pacing, and other elements are similar as well. The films, however, differ in scale. Ram Setu, with a reported budget of 150 crore, towers over the Telugu film, which was reported to have cost 30 crore. However, it may be a good thing that Ram Setu is reminiscent of a successful film from the south this year.
Ram Setu blends the best of the Indiana Jones and National Treasure schools of storytelling with desi action. Unfortunately, it also incorporates Bollywood melodrama. Once you manage to look past all that though, Ram Setu takes you on a fun ride.
