On Thursday, Ravindra Jadeja became only the 5th Indian bowler to reach 600 international wickets in three formats. The all-rounder accomplished this achievement during the first One-Day International against England at Nagpur’s Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium.
Jadeja accomplished the milestone with his third wicket of the match, finishing with 3-26 in nine overs as India dismissed the visitors for 248 in 47.4 overs.
Jadeja has joined the ranks of Indian bowlers who have taken 600 wickets, including Anil Kumble (953), Ravichandran Ashwin (765), Harbhajan Singh (707) and Kapil Dev (687).
Jadeja made an immediate effect upon entering the attack in the 15th over, extracting a strong turn from the surface. While Axar Patel bowled before him, Jadeja’s expertise won the battle of the left-arm spinners in the opening ODI series match.
Jadeja took his first wicket of the match by startling Joe Root with a faster delivery and trapping him LBW. He subsequently made a significant breakthrough by eliminating Jacob Bethell, who had scored 51 runs, in a similar manner.
His final scalp came when he clean bowled Adil Rashid, capping off a superb stint.
Since his international debut in 2009, Jadeja has been India’s go-to player in all three formats. His flexibility as a bowler, hitter, and fielder has made him a true match-winner over the years.
His numbers across formats speak volumes about his all-round brilliance. In Tests, Jadeja has 323 wickets with 3,370 runs. In ODIs, he has 223 wickets in 198 matches, including two five-wicket hauls.
Jadeja withdrew from T20Is after India won the 2024 T2OI World Cup last year.
Jadeja is one of seven Indian bowlers who have taken over 200 ODI wickets, alongside Anil Kumble, Kapil Dev, Javagal Srinath, Zaheer Khan, Ajit Agarkar, and Harbhajan Singh.
