The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Odisha, stating that a well-marked low pressure system over coastal West Bengal and bordering parts of Bangladesh and the Northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to deepen into a depression during the next 12 hours.
According to the most recent IMD bulletin issued today, heavy to very heavy rainfall, including isolated extremely heavy rainfall, is highly expected in Odisha on August 13. Rainfall is predicted to persist, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on August 14 and heavy rainfall on August 15 and 16, as the cyclone moves northwestward toward Jharkhand.
Similar circumstances are projected for Gangetic West Bengal, with extremely heavy rain expected today, followed by heavy to very heavy rain on August 14 and heavy rain on August 15.
Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a warning for squally winds blowing up to 60 kmph over the North Bay of Bengal and along and off the coasts of Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh for the next 24 hours. Fishermen are urged not to enter into the North Bay of Bengal or along and off the beaches of Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh until August 14.
With persistent rain already falling in north Odisha districts, officials have been warned to be on high alert for potential waterlogging, flash floods, and landslides in vulnerable areas.
