Stock Market Highlights on Tuesday, February 24, 2026: India’s major equity indices suffered their worst session in four days as HDFC Bank, Larsen & Toubro, and IT stocks fell. US President Donald Trump’s threat of fresh tariffs knocked on market mood.
The Nifty 50 closed 1.12 percent or 288.35 points lower at 25,424.65, while the Sensex closed 1.28 percent or 1,068.74 points lower at 82,225.92.
Over the weekend, Trump responded with 15% new, temporary worldwide tariffs and cautioned countries not to back out of freshly signed trade deals, despite the fact that the US Supreme Court deemed Trump’s tariffs invalid.
Broader markets outperformed their benchmark indices. The Nifty MidCap and Nifty SmallCap indices closed 0.32 percent and 0.55 percent lower, respectively.
Among sectors, the Nifty IT suffered the most. After reaching a two-year low in the intraday session, the index closed 4.74 percent lower at 30,053.50. The Nifty Realty was the second poorest performer, down 2.54 percent. Meanwhile, the Nifty Metal index has excelled.
