Shubman Gill, India’s vice-captain, extended his impressive form with a record-breaking century in the third and final One-Day International against England on Wednesday at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The 25-year-old opener scored his seventh ODI century off just 95 balls, establishing his status as one of the format’s most dependable batters.
Gill’s milestone knock also resulted in two astounding records. He became the fastest hitter to amass 2,500 ODI runs, doing so in his 50th encounter, surpassing South Africa’s Hashim Amla, who had held the record at 51 innings. Furthermore, the Gujarat Titans captain scored 5000 international runs in only 131 innings across formats.
His outstanding achievements in the ODI series against England have propelled him to second place in the new ICC ODI batting rankings, surpassing India captain Rohit Sharma. Gill’s scores of 87 and 60 in the first two ODIs had already put him in contention for the top spot, and his century in Ahmedabad has cemented his place among the world’s best batsmen.
Gill’s passion for Ahmedabad as a batting venue remained as he delivered another superb performance. In February 2023, the right-hander recorded his greatest T20I score of an undefeated 126 against New Zealand at the same stadium.
A month later, he got his first Test century on the same field against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, hitting 128 off 251 balls. Gill has an amazing average of nearly 80 in nine innings at Ahmedabad, making it his second most prolific venue behind Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe, where he has also scored over 400 runs.
Gill left after scoring 112 runs from 102 deliveries, including 14 boundaries and three maximums.
