The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday that conditions are conducive for the southwest monsoon to advance into additional portions of Odisha during the next four to five days.
According to the IMD’s lunchtime weather advisory, the monsoon is forecast to move into further portions of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and southern Chhattisgarh within the same time period.
According to the weather service, a low-pressure system and increasing moisture incursion across the region are facilitating the continuous progress of monsoon activity across eastern and central India.
The IMD has issued an Orange Warning for thunderstorms with lightning, gusty surface winds of 50-60 kmph, and heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Kandhamal, and Koraput districts.
Similar thunderstorm activity with gusty winds of 50–60 kmph is likely in Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Rayagada, and Malkangiri districts, the IMD said.
A Yellow Warning has also been issued for Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh districts, where thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph are likely at isolated places.
In addition, the weather department has forecast hot and humid conditions at isolated places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh on June 15, 16, and 17, 2026.
The IMD has advised people to use caution during thunderstorms, avoid open places during lightning, and heed local weather advisories issued by authorities.
With monsoon activity predicted to intensify further, some portions of Odisha can expect higher rainfall and a gradual shift in prevailing meteorological conditions over the next several days.
