The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for Mayurbhanj district and a yellow alert for 20 other districts in Odisha for tomorrow, warning of thunderstorms with lightning.
According to the most recent forecast, thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds are expected to occur tomorrow afternoon and tonight in one or two locations in these districts.
The IMD has issued an orange warning for Mayurbhanj, indicating that thunderstorms with lightning and severe gusty surface winds of 50 to 60 kmph are expected. A yellow alert has also been issued for the following districts: Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
In these areas, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) are likely. The weather department has advised people to remain alert, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.
“Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and gusty surface wind (wind speed reaching upto 40-50 kmph) are very likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri”, read the IMD prediction for May 13.
Thunderstorms with lightning and strong surface wind (up to 40-50 kmph) are extremely likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours on May 14 in one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Nabarangapur, Malkangiri, Rayagada, and Koraput. These districts have received a yellow warning.
The regional weather office predicts thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface wind (up to 40-50 kmph) in the afternoon/evening hours on May 15 in one or two places across the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Nabarangapur, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Koraput, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal. These districts are on yellow alert.

Citizens have been advised not to seek shelter under trees and to take appropriate precautions against lightning and severe gusts. Farmers and those working outside should organize their operations properly.
