Deepak Punia of Tokyo won a bronze medal in the 86kg freestyle weight category after defeating Maksat Satybaldy at the U23 Asian wrestling championships 2022 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
Despite winning, his performance was unimpressive, as the Indian contingent expected a better performance from the world championships silver medalist in the tournament.
Punia, 23, lost in the first two rounds to eventual gold medalist Azizbek Fayzullaev of Uzbekistan and Nurtilek Karypbaev of Kyrgyzstan. According to an Olympics.com report, he overpowered Satybaldy of Kazakhstan to take bronze.
Deepak Punia, along with Tokyo 2020 medalists Bajrang Punia and Ravi Kumar Dahiya, was named to the Indian wrestling team for the Commonwealth Games 2022 last month.
India won 25 medals in total at the event’s U23 meet, including 10 gold medals. On Sunday, the eight-day continental championship came to an end.
