Deepti Sharma’s three-wicket haul and Pooja Vastrakar’s two-wicket haul helped India win the final match of the Women’s T20I Tri-series by eight wickets on Monday.
After Deepti Sharma took 3-11 in four overs and Pooja took 2-19, Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur put on an unbeaten 54-run stand to help India reach 94/5 in 13.5 overs.
The Indian bowlers delivered an outstanding performance, keeping the West Indian women on a tight leash. As West Indies batters struggled to get going, Rajeshwari Gayakwad claimed 1-9 in four overs and Renuka Singh conceded only 22 runs in four overs.
Ror West Indies women’s opener and captain Hayley Matthews led the way with a run-a-ball 34 and five boundaries. However, her opening partner Rashada Williams was bowled for eight runs off 12 balls by Deepti Sharma, as the West Indies lost their first wicket with 18 runs on the board. She claimed Shemaine Campbelle’s wicket off the next ball, giving her two wickets in two balls.
Zaida James scored 21 off 31 balls near the end of the innings, hitting two sixes, but West Indies could only manage 94/6 in their 20 overs.
Chasing a small target, India lost Smriti Mandhana for five runs early in the second over, with the score at eight runs. However, fellow opener Jemimah Rodrigues hit an unbeaten 42 off 39 balls, including five fours, and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur hit an unbeaten 32 off 23 balls. India sped to 95/2 in 13.5 overs, winning by eight wickets with 37 balls remaining.
India and South Africa have already qualified for the series final, which will be played on Thursday.
With this dominant performance, India has remained unbeaten in this Tri-series, while the West Indies have lost all of their matches leading up to the T20 World Cup. The West Indies women have not played a T20I match since September 2022.
