As its official debut approaches, Toyota’s upcoming mid-size SUV has already begun to make some noise in the market. In the compact C-segment SUV space, the car will compete with other segment heavyweights such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and others. It will compete with Maruti’s twin sibling, which is also expected to be released later this year.
Toyota’s SUV, codenamed D22, has been spotted testing on Indian roads several times. Its front end was also leaked while it was filming a TV commercial, revealing that it will be known as the Urban Cruiser Hyryder when it is released. This is the same name that the Japanese company registered as a trademark a few months ago.
2022 Toyota HyRyder SUV Colours
Toyota will manufacture both iterations of the SUV at its Bidadi plant in Karnataka. Both Toyota and Maruti’s SUVs will be built on a heavily localized version of the former’s global TNGA-B platform. Designer Pratyush Rout has digitally rendered the upcoming Urban Cruiser HyRyder crossover in multiple color schemes based on recent spy shots. Toyota HyRyder digital illustration is based on the brand’s current global design language seen on international models. It gets a curved blacked-out plastic covering for the front grille, flanked on both sides by sleek twin LED DRLs. The bumper houses the projector headlights. A large air dam with honeycomb pattern inserts is also housed in the front bumper. Similarly to the year 2022 Venue, there are no fog lamps.
This rendition’s side profile emphasizes the vehicle’s SUV stance with flared-up wheel arches wrapped in black plastic cladding and creases along the side panels. Machine-cut alloy wheels in a dual-tone nicely fill out the wheel arches. The roofline gently slopes towards the rear, similar to contemporary urban-centric SUVs, lending it crossover appeal.
Roof rails, chrome trim on window sills, and integrated turn signals on ORVMs mounted on doors are among the other visual highlights. The rear end of the SUV has yet to be rendered because there hasn’t been enough evidence of its sightings. Toyota is also expected to equip the upcoming SUV’s cabin with modern amenities such as a freestanding touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument console, wireless connectivity, a sunroof, and leather seats,rear AC vents, ventilated seats, etc.
Powertrain Specs Expected
While Toyota has been tight-lipped about its powertrain options, it is almost certain that the SUV will use a hybrid powertrain due to the carmaker’s recent hybrid technology campaigning and the trademark itself. According to rumors, the Toyota-Maruti SUV will be powered by a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine. The current Ertiga, XL6, is powered by the same engine. It will be available in both mild and strong hybrid varieties. The former will produce the same amount of power and torque as the Ertiga – 103 PS / 138 Nm. The latter will provide more power as well as greater mileage. The power output is expected to be around 116 PS, with a claimed mileage of more than 20 kmpl.
The configuration automatically alternates between hybrid and pure EV modes. The launch price is expected to be between Rs 10 and Rs 16 lakh.
