The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported powerful explosions near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) on Saturday evening and Sunday morning, amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
More than a dozen explosions were heard near the Zaporizhzhia NPP and at the plant site on Sunday, according to Xinhua, citing an IAEA statement.
According to the IAEA, which cited plant management, some buildings, systems, and equipment were damaged at the Zaporizhzhia NPP site, but none are critical for nuclear safety and security at this time.
Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has urged Russia and Ukraine to establish a nuclear safety and security zone around the Zaporizhzhia NPP as soon as possible.
The Zaporizhzhia NPP, one of Europe’s largest nuclear power plants, has been under Russian control since March.
The plant has been shelled in recent months, with Russia and Ukraine accusing each other of the attacks.
