On instructions of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Chief Secretary Suresh Chandra Mahapatra and Secretary to CM (5T) V K Pandian visited Rourkela and reviewed the progress of the under-construction Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium.
Secretary Sports and Youth Services R Vineel Krishna and Managing Director, IDCO, Bhupendra Singh Punia accompanied them to Rourkela.
The team inspected the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium, which is still under construction on the BPUT campus in Rourkela. Both the main stadium and the practice field have been completed. Following an inspection of both pitches and the stadium’s high mast lights, the license for the game was granted.
It is worth noting that Raurkela will host 20 Men’s Hockey World Cup matches. The first match will be between India and Spain on January 13. Three practice matches will be held beginning December 24. If any defects are found during these practice matches, steps will be taken to strengthen the infrastructure. Mohapatra also expressed hope that the Rourkela airport would be completed soon and that the necessary licenses would be obtained.
Under the UDAN scheme, four flights will be available for the players. Within a year, a world-class stadium was built. The Chief Secretary and Secretary to the Chief Minister (5T) thanked the people of Sundergarh and Raurkela for their unwavering support for the state government.
Rourkela will host the Hockey World Cup for the first time. Several spectators from across the state and beyond will flock to Rourkela to watch the hockey games. As a result, modern parking is being built around the stadium to accommodate spectator vehicles. Aside from that, plans are being made to provide drinking water and toilets inside the stadium. LEDs are being installed in various locations for the spectators who will be outside the stadium.
Sundargarh Collector Parag Harshad Gavali, Rourkela ADM and Commissioner Rourkela Municipal Corporation Subhankar Mohapatra, and other senior district administration and Rourkela Municipal Corporation officials were present during the team’s visit.
It should be noted that the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 will be held in Odisha. The World Cup will be held at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar and the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela, which is still under construction. It will be India’s largest hockey stadium. In this stadium, over 20,000 people can sit and watch the game at the same time.
