According to our sources, Mahindra & Mahindra will launch a more affordable Thar SUV with a 1.5-litre diesel engine and 2WD in January 2023. The second-generation Thar, which will be introduced in India on October 2, 2020, is the most sought-after off-roader in the country.
The Mahindra Thar is currently available with two engine options: a 2.0-litre m
Stallion 150 turbocharged petrol (1,997cc, 150bhp peak power, 320Nm peak torque) and 2.2-litre methanol
Hawk 130 turbodiesel (2,184cc, 130bhp of maximum power and 300Nm of peak torque). Both engines are available with 6-speed MT or 6-speed AT torque converters. The Thar range includes a 4WD system as standard.
Below are the variant-wise Mahindra Thar prices (ex-showroom).
Mahindra Thar Petrol MT
- AX Opt Convertible Top – Rs 13.59 lakh
- LX Hard Top – Rs 14.28 lakh
Mahindra Thar Petrol AT
- LX Convertible Top – Rs 15.74 lakh
- LX Hard Top – Rs 15.82 lakh
Mahindra Thar Diesel MT
- AX Opt Convertible Top – Rs 14.16 lakh
- AX Opt Hard Top – Rs 14.21 lakh
- LX Convertible Top – Rs 14.77 lakh
- LX Hard Top – Rs 14.87 lakh
Mahindra Thar Diesel AT
- LX AT Convertible Top – Rs 16.20 lakh
- LX AT Hard Top – Rs 16.29 lakh
The Mahindra Thar will receive a 1.5-litre diesel engine with 1,497cc displacement from the Mahindra Marazzo. The engine in the MPV produces 121bhp of maximum power and 300Nm of peak torque and is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Instead of 4WD, this new model will have 2WD.
Passenger vehicles (PVs) sold in India are subject to a 28% GST. A cess is levied on them in the range of 1% to 22%, depending on their overall length, engine type (petrol/diesel), and displacement.
A PV that is less than 4,000mm long and has a petrol/CNG engine with a displacement of less than 1,200cc is subject to a 1% cess. A sub-4,000mm PV powered by a diesel engine with a displacement of less than 1,500cc draws3% cess.
Although the Thar meets the length criteria (it is 3,985mm long), it does not meet the engine displacement standard in either petrol or diesel form, resulting in a 20% cess. As a result, prices have risen.
Thar prices will decrease once the SUV receives the Marazzo’s 1.5-litre diesel engine and a 2WD system. We anticipate Mahindra pricing it aggressively, which means you could get a Thar for less than Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom).
Off-roading enthusiasts will soon have more options, thanks to Maruti Suzuki India’s plans to showcase the 5-door Jimny at the Auto Expo 2023. When it is released, the 5-door Jimny will be the most potent competitor to the Thar 1.5-litre diesel 2WD.
