In Delhi, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, awarded the National IP (Intellectual Property) Award for the year 2021-22 in the agricultural category to Kandhamal Haladi.
Dr. P Karthigeyan from CTTC, Ministry of MSME, an IPR expert at the time, filed and facilitated the grant for GI Tag (App No: 610) on Kandhamal Haladi (Turmeric) in 2019. Dr. Brundha, who was the President of KASAM and Kandhamal Collector, issued the grant certificate (No: 344).
He is currently the Deputy Manager of the NLC-Ministry of Coal, Government of India, and a former Research Scientist at IIT Madras. In Odisha’s centrally located district, primarily populated by SC and ST people, Kandhamal Haladi is a well-known spice.
Approximately 60% of the geographical region is hilly and forested. This region has a favorable agroclimatic environment for the development of numerous spices, primarily turmeric, ginger, mustard, and tamarind.
Kandhamal turmeric has received the GI label because to its default organic nature, industrial, therapeutic usefulness, and other physical and chemical properties in comparison to other turmeric.
The benefits of GI Tag are to provide farmers with livelihood support and to improve their socioeconomic status, to provide direct and indirect employment among educated rural youth, to promote Kandhamal turmeric with a commercial identification, to attract domestic and international markets by increasing the export and import of turmeric, and to improve the district’s economy.
