On the second day of the fifth and final Test match between India and England at the HPCA Stadium on Friday, the hosts reached 264/1 at lunchtime thanks to centuries from captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill.
In perfect weather and batting conditions, Rohit (102 off 160) and Gill (101* off 142) dominated the first session of the day and put up a 160-run stand, India’s second consecutive hundred partnership in the series, as the team resumed at the overnight total of 135/1.
The pair was determined not to allow England to win, and they each reached their hundreds in three balls. The first person to hit the three-figure threshold was Rohit. With a clip-through midwicket off, he scored his second hundred of the series and 12th overall.
He returns the favour in the following over, allowing Gill to slog-sweep Shoaib Bashir for his second century of the series and fourth in Tests.
Early on, Gill took the lead and Rohit appeared to be in control at one end. The short ball trick was attempted by England, but it was unsuccessful since neither player allowed the pressure to grow.
Brief Scores: India 264/1 at lunch (Rohit Sharma 102*, Shubman Gill 101*) lead England 218 in 57.4 overs (Zak Crawley 79; Kuldeep Yadav 5-72, Ravichandran Ashwin 4-51) by 46 runs.
