With 14 districts set to face the brunt of the severe cyclonic storm Dana, the Odisha government has imposed school closures in the affected areas from October 23 to 25.
According to a notification issued by the Special Relief Commissioner, schools in the cyclone-prone districts of Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Angul, Khordha, Nayagarh, and Cuttack will remain closed.
According to authorities, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that a low-pressure system over the east-central Bay of Bengal would develop into a depression on October 22 and a cyclonic storm on October 23.
By October 24 morning, the system is forecast to reach the northwest Bay of Bengal off the shores of Odisha and West Bengal. It is expected to cross the north Odisha and West Bengal shores between Puri and Sagar Island during the night of October 24 and early morning of October 25 at winds of 100-110 KMPH, gusting up to 120 KMPH.
“Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Angul, Khordha, Nayagarh, and Cuttack districts are expected to be hit by wind and severe rainfall. Keeping this in mind, the Special Relief Commissioner’s letter stated that schools in the aforementioned districts will remain closed from October 23 to October 25 as a precautionary measure.
