The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Yellow Warnings for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds throughout a large portion of Odisha, warning residents and farmers to remain vigilant as unstable weather conditions prevail owing to a well-defined low-pressure system in eastern India.
According to the IMD’s midday weather report, a low-pressure region over southwest Bihar and bordering east Uttar Pradesh, combined with an accompanying cyclonic circulation, continues to impact weather patterns in Odisha. The monsoon trough that runs through this system has increased rainfall activity and thunderstorm hazards in various districts.
Date wise District-Wise Yellow Warnings:
July 17: Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) are very likely at one or two places in Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Sundargarh.
July 17–19: The same warning is extended to Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nawarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and the previously listed districts, indicating widespread vulnerability to lightning and sudden wind gusts.
July 19–21: Warnings persist for coastal and interior districts, including Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati, along with earlier districts—marking a near-statewide alert zone.
July 21–23: The IMD escalates its alert, forecasting isolated heavy rainfall in addition to thunderstorms and lightning, likely to impact several districts across the state.
The IMD has advised people, particularly those in rural and agricultural areas, to avoid wide fields, tall structures, and lone trees during storms. Farmers are encouraged to protect their equipment and livestock and avoid operating in exposed areas during thunderstorm warnings.
Meanwhile, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely in much of North Odisha and a few sections of South Odisha over the next 24 hours. Temperatures in Bhubaneswar are expected to be between 34°C and 25°C, with mostly cloudy skies and possible rain or thundershowers.
With intense monsoon conditions and weather instability predicted to continue, authorities are warning local governments and the general public to stay prepared and constantly watch advisories.
