One of the most revered Hindu festival is Janmashtami, sometimes referred to as Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami. This day, which commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is widely observed throughout India.

On the eighth day (ashtami) of the dark fortnight (waning moon fortnight) of the Hindu calendar month Bhadrapada (August–September on the Gregorian calendar), the Hindu festival of Janmashtami commemorates the birth (janma) of the god Krishna. The festival is a festive occasion that includes ritual fasting and devotion of Krishna, as well as group dance and singing of songs called bhajans.

Significance of Janmashtami

The eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in the month of Bhadrapada is when Janmashtami is observed in accordance with the Hindu Lunar Calendar. This often occurs in August or September.

Since Lord Krishna is thought to have been born in Mathura more than 5,200 years ago to Devaki and Vasudeva, the day is regarded as spiritually significant. To commemorate his heavenly purpose of destroying evil and creating dharma (good), his birth is commemorated. Elderly folks would tell you that the purpose of Krishna’s birth was to abolish the oppressive rule of King Kansa, his maternal uncle, who wanted to kill him. Despite numerous attempts by Kansa, Krishna’s miraculous survival during infancy and childhood symbolises the victory of good over evil.

Krishna Janmashtami

Legend of the birth of Krishna

Krishna is born as an avatar of Vishnu to relieve the earth from the burden of demonic asuras (anti-gods) who rule as monarchs on Earth, according to the account of Krishna’s birth found in the tenth volume of the Bhagavata Purana (c. 10th century). The town of Mathura (in present-day Uttar Pradesh) is ruled by one such demon king, Kamsa, who is a member of the Yadu tribe. Vishnu is told to be born into this clan. When Kamsa’s sister Devaki marries Vasudeva, a heavenly voice (ākāśavānī) predicts that Kamsa would be killed by her eighth son.  Kamsa intends to murder Devaki in order to stop his death from happening, but Vasudeva steps in and swears to give the king all of the children that are born to him and Devaki. Kamsa kills the couple’s first six children and puts them in jail. Balarama, the seventh child, is mysteriously placed in the womb of Rohini, Vasudeva’s first wife. According to the Bhagavata Purana, Balarama is identified as Shesha, the serpent monarch, and is regarded as a partial avatar of Vishnu.

Divine signs accompany Vishnu’s birth as Krishna, and before he changes into a human baby, Vasudeva and Devaki are given a glimpse of their child as the ultimate Vishnu in his celestial form. As Vishnu, he informs his human parents that his heavenly feminine power, Shakti, or Yogamaya, was born to Yashoda across the Yamuna River in Gokula (ancient Vraja) at the same time. He advises them to plan a switch between the two babies.

With the help of illusory strength and divine will, the prison doors open, and Vasudeva transports the kid across the river to Gokula, where his foster mother Yashoda will raise him safely. Yogamaya turns into a goddess and frightens and humbles Kamsa when he arrives to witness the eighth kid that has been prophesied. After doing numerous other divine feats, Krishna ultimately defeats his demon uncle Kamsa.

Krishna Janmashtami

Why is Janmashtami Celebrated for 2 Days?

The reason that Janmashtami is celebrated over two days is one of its distinctive features. Why is it the case? is a common question. The timing of Krishna’s birth and the Hindu lunar calendar provide the answer.

On the Ashtami tithi (eighth day) of Krishna Paksha, Lord Krishna was born at midnight. Depending on the moment of midnight, the Ashtami tithi may fall on two consecutive days because, according to Hindu custom, the day is measured from sunrise to the following dawn. Because of this, Janmashtami is celebrated for two days in many areas, particularly in towns like Mathura and Vrindavan that have significant religious significance.

On the first day, devotees observe a daylong fast, offer special prayers, and remain up till midnight on the first day, which is when Krishna was born. Devotees break their fast and engage in a variety of joyful festivities on the next day, Nanda Utsav, which commemorates the happy celebration of Krishna’s birth.

Krishna Janmashtami

How is Janmashtami Celebrated?

The occasion of Janmashtami is observed especially in Mathura and nearby Vrindavan, the places where Krishna spent his childhood and early youth, as narrated in the Bhagavata Purana. India’s cultural richness is reflected in the diverse range of customs and rituals that are observed during the Janmashtami celebration. Every element of Janmashtami is joyful and devoted, from feasting to fasting, from silent prayers to boisterous public performances.

  • Fasting and Midnight Vigil- On Janmashtami, devotees follow a rigorous fast, avoiding grains and specific foods. Following the custom of worshiping the infant Krishna, who is held in a gorgeously adorned swing, the fast is only broken after midnight. To commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna, devotees recite slokas, sing bhajans (devotional songs), and do aarti. An essential component of the festival is the midnight vigil, or Jagran, which represents the devotees’ preparedness to accept the heavenly infant into their life.
  • Decorations and Celebrations in Temples and Homes – Intricate rangolis, lights, and flowers are used to decorate homes and temples. The cradle, or jhoola, is frequently a focal point in homes and temples, and the statues of Lord Krishna are clothed in new garments. Particularly well-known for their ornate decorations and lavish celebrations during Janmashtami are temples such as the Jagannath Temple in Odisha, the ISKCON temples in Delhi and Vrindavan, and the Prem Mandir in Vrindavan. Special Jhankis (tableaux) depicting scenes from Krishna’s life are set up in many temples, attracting large crowds of devotees. These Jhankis often include depictions of Krishna’s playful activities as a child, his interaction with the gopis (milkmaids), and the legendary Raas Leela.
  • Dahi Handi- The Dahi Handi celebration, which is held the day following Janmashtami, is among the most colorful and thrilling parts of the holiday. In Maharashtra, this custom is particularly well-liked. Motivated by Lord Krishna’s fondness for butter, young men construct human pyramids in an attempt to reach and shatter a pot (handi) that is suspended high above the ground and contains curd or butter. This incident represents the fun and mischievous attitude of Krishna, which is why he is known as “Makhan Chor” or “Butter Thief.”
  • Cultural Performances and Celebrations in Schools- Children in Indian schools often commemorate Janmashtami by dressing up as Lord Krishna, Radha, and other figures from Krishna’s life. The Bhagavad Gita’s lessons, Krishna’s childhood stories, and his celestial adventures are all told through dance performances, plays, and recitations.

In conclusion, Janmashtami is a celebration of life, love, and the unbreakable connection between the devotee and the deity rather than only a religious holiday. Let us immerse ourselves in the teachings of Lord Krishna as we approach Janmashtami. He was a living example of the concepts of dharma (righteousness), bhakti (devotion), and karma (activity).

This festival provides a significant chance for spiritual development and inner happiness, regardless of whether you intend to break the Dahi Handi, take part in a midnight vigil, or just think back on Krishna’s life.

“Happy Janmastami”
