A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is likely to move northwest and intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that this system continued and intensified on Sunday afternoon over the west-central and adjacent northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjacent seas around the coasts of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha. Within the following 24 hours, it is probably going to deepen into a depression and move west-northwest. On the morning of August 19, it is expected to cross the coasts of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha, according to the regional weather agency.
Three districts in south Odisha—Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nabarangapur—are under a red alert from the IMD due to severe to extremely heavy rains expected on Monday. Furthermore, there is a high probability of exceptionally heavy rains at sporadic locations within these areas. Heavy rainfall is also anticipated in the districts of Kalahandi, Rayagada, and Gajapati.
According to the weather service, there will likely be substantial rainfall in a number of Odisha districts, including Ganjam, Kandhamal, Boudh, Sonepur, Balangir, and Nuapada. In several parts of Odisha, thunderstorms and lightning are also possible, along with strong winds. Because severe rainfall might cause waterlogging and disturb daily life, residents are recommended to remain vigilant and take the appropriate precautions.
The rainfall data shows that Paralakhemundi received the most rainfall (20 mm), followed by Bhabanipatna (13.8 mm) and Jagatsinghpur (14.2 mm). Additional noteworthy rainfall was recorded in Talcher (13.4 mm), Daringbadi (12 mm), Nayagarh (10 mm), Chandbali (9.5 mm), and Balangir (7.5 mm).
