As you get older, your cognitive functions weaken. Ageing has an impact on memory, attention, and problem-solving abilities. While this aging occurs naturally as you age, incorrect lifestyle behaviors can accelerate the process, raising severe concerns about brain health and the possibility of acquiring dementia in the long run.

On September 30, 2025, eBioMedicine, part of The Lancet Discovery Science, published a study that found insufficient sleep as one of the causes of accelerated brain ageing.

How poor sleep harms your brain

According to the study, sleep has brain-protective advantages. Those who do not get enough or adequate sleep may have a brain that ages faster than the rest of their bodies. Sleep disorders pave the way for neurodegenerative diseases in the future due to accelerated aging.

The researchers looked at over 27,000 persons and used brain scans to estimate their age. This is a measure of how old the brain seems in relation to a person’s actual age. Those with moderate or poor sleep patterns showed much older brains than their chronological age. People with average sleep patterns had brains that were 0.6 years older, whereas those who slept poorly had brains that were more than a year older than their actual age.

The study researchers developed a sleep score, and every drop in that score resulted in increased brain age by about a half a year.

Cause behind brain ageing
