The monsoon season is a unique period of the year when rainfall occurs. Heavy rainfall during the monsoon season can cause waterlogging in some locations, providing a breeding ground for disease-carrying vectors such as mosquitos, flies, and ticks. As a result, infections such as dengue fever, malaria, typhoid, and diarrhea are prevalent during the monsoon season.

Increased humidity also encourages the growth of germs and fungi, making food contamination more likely. Improper food handling and storage can cause foodborne illnesses such as diarrhea, gastroenteritis, and food poisoning.

  • Personal Hygiene

It reduces the risk of skin infections and gastrointestinal and respiratory infections.
  • Skin Care: The heavy rains increase the humidity, and the skin remains moist and oily. This, in turn, leads to fungal infections, rashes and acne. Use an antibacterial soap like Dettol bar soap to take a bath. Also, keep the skin dry to avoid skin problems.
  • Respiratory Health: Viral fever due to allergies and respiratory tract infections are common problems faced during the rainy season. So, educate yourself with information on viral fever during monsoons. Also, cover your mouth while coughing or sneezing. And avoid close contact with people who are sick.

7 Health Tips for monsoon season

Rains are beautiful, but you can enjoy it only if you stay healthy. Health problems during the rainy season range from a normal cold and flu to severe malaria or gastroenteritis. So, taking the necessary safety precautions during the rainy season and following monsoon health tips is imperative. Here are 7 rainy season health tips:

  1. Maintain Personal Hygiene: Proper hygiene is the most important rainy season health tip. It is crucial to practice good personal hygiene to stay healthy during monsoons. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, especially before preparing or eating meals. While travelling, in absence of water, use a Hand sanitizer. Take a bath daily. Wash the clothes with detergent and Dettol Antiseptic Liquid and dry them properly to prevent fungal skin infections.
  2. Stay Hydrated: Monsoons provide a much-needed respite from the hot summers, but one tends to sweat a lot because of high humidity. So, drink plenty of filtered water to keep the body hydrated while it flushes out toxins.
  3. Exercise caution with water: During the rainy season, the water is easily contaminated and can cause water-borne diseases like typhoid, diarrhoea etc. You can get more information on water-borne diseases right here. To prevent these diseases, make sure the drinking water is properly filtered to eliminate any chances of potential contaminants. Use clean water to wash vegetables and fruits. Washing fruits with contaminated water can make you sick. So, even while travelling, drink bottled water or carry your own filtered or boiled water with you.
  4. Eat Fresh and Nutritious Food: Monsoon season provides the perfect conditions for bacteria, mould and other germs to thrive. It’s best to avoid raw, undercooked, stale or street food during this season. Many street food vendors prepare the dishes under unhygienic conditions, which can be stale too. Stale food can easily become contaminated in this weather and lead to food poisoning. So, focus on eating freshly cooked meals prepared in hygienic conditions.
  5. Boost your Immunity: Rains come with an increased risk of infections. So, it is better to strengthen your immunity and fight against infections. Take a balanced nutritious meal and include immunity-boosting foods like probiotics, nuts and seeds, and fruits rich in Vitamin C.
  6. Stay Active and Fit: Physical activity is known to improve immunity and is important for the overall well-being of an individual. So, despite the damp weather, maintain a regular routine for exercise. You can engage in indoor exercises or practice yoga at home.
  7. Proper clothes: Wear airy, breathable fabric that absorbs the sweat too. It will keep you cool and comfortable. Mosquitoes are quite common in monsoons and can spread diseases like dengue, chikungunya, and malaria. So, wear long sleeve clothes and full pants to avoid mosquito bites. Also, use mosquito nets while sleeping. Ensure no stagnant water is around your area to prevent mosquito breeding.

Maintaining personal hygiene is the primary monsoon health tip that everyone must follow to stay healthy, fit and confident.
