Krishna Janmashtami is more than just a festival; it’s an entire event that engages all of your senses. Come be a part of this beautiful spectacle happening around India.

Let the festivities begin!

The event is held on the eighth day of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in either the Shravan or Bhadrapada months of the Hindu calendar. While the festival is celebrated all throughout India, to truly experience Janmashtami, go on a pilgrimage to Mathura and Vrindavan, the heartland of Krishna’s story, and see these holy cities come alive with hordes of believers. In certain temples, the days before Janmashtami are filled with rhythmic recitations of the ancient Bhagavad Gita.

After Krishna’s symbolic midnight birth, devotees bathe and clothe murtis (idols symbolizing the child Lord). These murtis are then put in cradles, and the devout break their fasts by sharing sweets and exquisite food in a festive celebration. Women add a particular touch by drawing little footprints outside their homes, representing Krishna’s journey inside their homes and hearts. The sight of children dressed as little Radha and Krishna, together with their infectious excitement, will steal your heart!

Krishna’s birth: A night of destiny

The narrative of Lord Krishna’s birth, as told in ancient books such as the Mahabharata and the Puranas, is a fascinating tale of miracles and optimism.

Krishna’s arrival was fraught with danger. His birthplace in a prison in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, where his parents, Devaki and Vasudeva, were imprisoned by Kansa, the cruel monarch and Krishna’s maternal uncle. A prophecy informed Kansa that Devaki’s eighth son would murder him. Kansa, driven by terror, imprisoned the couple and brutally murdered their first six children. However, supernatural intervention meant that Vasudeva’s seventh kid, Balarama, was safely transferred to another of his wives, Rohini.

Krishna was born on the eighth night, after a severe rainstorm. Miraculous events occurred, indicating the arrival of a divine being. Vasudeva’s jail shackles shattered, guards fell asleep, the prison gates swung wide, and the rushing Yamuna River divided, allowing Vasudeva to transport his newborn baby to safety. This night marked the start of Krishna’s amazing life, a life dedicated to combating evil and establishing justice.

A feast fit for a playful God!

Many delectable delicacies are presented to Lord Krishna, with a special emphasis on’makhan’ (butter), a tribute to his childhood appreciation for it. The god is also celebrated with a culinary extravaganza known as Chhapan Bhog, which includes 56 exquisite dishes. Travel to Puri, Odisha, to experience this tradition in all of its beauty. The renowned Jagannath Temple takes center stage for a delectable display. Lord Krishna, Balarama, and Subhadra receive 56 different sweet and savory goodies that have been painstakingly prepared.

The word ‘bhog’ refers to a wholehearted offering of food to the deity, therefore the feast is not only tasty but also highly significant. The bhog contains a lovely selection of delights inspired by Krishna’s playful youth spent with cows and loving dairy products, such as the melt-in-your-mouth pedas (milk-based sweets), the rich and sweet panjiri (made with dry fruits), and the creamy kheer. Imagine crispy sabudana vadas (sago fritters) brimming with flavor, or the delicious contrast of sweet and salty in seedai and thattai (snacks prepared with Bengal gram flour and rice).

Behold the human pyramids of Dahi Handi

A enormous ceramic pot, filled with a wonderful combination of milk, curd, butter, honey, and fruits, is raised to a height of 20 to 40 feet! This is where the real spectacle starts. Energetic young men and boys build a daring human pyramid, with each member standing on the shoulders of the person below. Watch in astonishment as they climb higher and higher, displaying their collaboration and agility for all to see. The top player reaches the coveted pot, busts it open, and lavishes himself and his team with the sweet reward. But the fun does not end there! Currency notes are frequently connected to the rope that suspends the pot, providing a financial incentive for this thrilling stunt.  The prize money is then shared amongst the courageous participants who formed the human pyramid. Head to Mumbai, Goa or Gujarat to experience this spectacle as these are the places where Dahi Handi is mainly celebrated.

Dahi Handi takes inspiration from Lord Krishna’s joyful childhood. According to legend, Krishna, famed for his love of butter, would steal pots of milk and curd from neighboring residences. To protect their treats, the women would hang them high above his reach. But Krishna, ever ingenious, would create human pyramids with his companions to reach the tasty pots! So don’t pass up the opportunity to watch Dahi Handi, a genuinely unique event during Krishna Janmashtami celebrations.

Come and experience the enchanting festivities of Krishna Janmashtami in India, where vibrant celebrations and cultural traditions await!
