After Congress and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) members repeatedly disrupted the Odisha State Assembly on the first day of the Monsoon Session, the assembly was adjourned until Wednesday. The MMDR Bill was protested by the opposition, who also claimed that school textbooks contained mistakes.
Due to opposition members interfering with the regular operation of the House, it was first adjourned until 1.10 pm and then till 4 pm. Congress and BJD lawmakers flooded the House well once more, shouting slogans and making a loud disruption as the Assembly met again around 4 p.m. The House was forced to adjourn till the next day by Speaker Surama Padhy.
With obituary allusions to departed lawmakers, public leaders, and public officials, the session got underway solemnly. In addition to expressing sorrow at their passing, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi made the condolence gestures. The House also honored those who perished in Nepal’s recent floods. Before the scheduled business started, members observed the traditional silence.
However, BJD and Congress MLAs hurried to the well with placards as soon as Question Hour started. They interrupted the proceedings by shouting slogans over the MMDR Bill and claiming errors in textbooks. The Speaker’s repeated pleas for composure were ignored. She adjourned the House till 1:10 pm due to the ongoing protests.
When the Assembly met again at 1.10 pm, the Opposition members resumed their protest. The continued uproar once again forced the Speaker to adjourn the proceedings till 4 pm.
