The six workmen who vanished after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed in Baltimore City were reportedly thought to be dead, according to US authorities. Additionally, until Wednesday, the hunt for the missing workers was put on hold.
The precise number of individuals flung into the Patapsco River after the collapse is unknown, however reports state that at least eight people did so. Two people have been saved thus far.
It is important to note that local authorities were attempting to rescue at least seven people after the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the US city of Baltimore collapsed early on Tuesday following a collision with a sizable ship.
In a video that was uploaded on X, a big ship was seen colliding with the bridge and caught fire before sinking, sending several vehicles into the Patapsco River, Xinhua news agency reported.
“All lanes closed both directions for incident on I-695 Key Bridge. Traffic is being detoured,” the Maryland Transportation Authority posted on X.
Reportedly, 22 Indian crew members were on board when the crash occurred. Fortunately, all the crew members are safe.
Dali, as the Singapore flagged ship is called, was bound for Colombo in Sri Lanka. It was sailing at eight knots, when it went out of control because of a power outage.
It caused part of the Francis Scott Bridge across the Patapsco River to collapse when it struck one of the bridge’s pillars. According to The Washington Post, of all continuous truss bridges worldwide, the Francis Scott Bridge had the third-longest main span.
Between adjacent towers and the supporting pillars, there were more than 1,200 feet. According to authorities, more than 35,000 commuters used the 1.6-mile bridge every day. Rebuilding the bridge will be funded by federal funds, according to US President Joe Biden. According to officials, their current focus is on locating the missing.
